YAPN Workshop – 19th October, Leeds – Dialectic: Socrates to the Stoics

The next meeting of the Yorkshire Ancient Philosophy Network (YAPN) within the White Rose Centre for the History of Philosophy (CHiPhi) will be in Leeds, on Friday 19th October, 2017, 10am-5pm, at the IDEA Centre, 17 Blenheim Terrace, University of Leeds. LS2 9JT. We will go for drinks and dinner afterwards.

PROGRAMME:

9.30-10.00 Tea / Coffee

10.00-12.00 Reading Group: Stoics on Dialectic and Rhetoric (introduced by Vladimir Mikes (Czech Academy of Sciences / IDEA Centre, University of Leeds))

12.00-1.00 Lunch (provided)

1.00-2.30 George Klosko (University of Virginia) – “What Socrates Says and Doesn’t Say”

2.30-3.00 Tea / Coffee

3.00-4.30  Jamie Dow (IDEA Centre, University of Leeds) – “Socrates on what Speechmaking Can’t Do but Dialectic Can”

Afterwards: drinks and dinner*

Drinks – time permitting – will be at the Nation of Shopkeepers (at the corner of Great George Street and Cookridge Street), and Dinner will be from about 6.30pm at tbc (walking distance from the station).

There is no charge, and although turning up on the day is ok, the tradition of the group is for papers to be pre-read, and the bulk of time devoted to discussion. For this reason, and to assist with catering (especially if you would like to attend the dinner), please do notify us of your intention to attend: email Jamie Dow j.dow@leeds.ac.uk. It would be much appreciated.

* the dinner (but not drinks) will be subsidised by the Centre for the History of Philosophy for postgraduate students and staff of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, Hull and York, as well as for speakers.

Similarly, the White Rose Centre for the History of Philosophy (CHiPhi) will be able to reimburse travel between the White Rose universities for staff and students of those institutions (i.e. to Leeds from York or Sheffield).
